Chompoo, N7

Unappetising name, delicious food!

After moving to Highbury last year, I immediately started looking at the nearest food spots in the area. There were plenty of fried chicken shops and small cafés but few decent looking restaurants if you didn’t want to go to Upper Street. A few places made the list though, including Standard Tandoori (Indian), Constolia (Turkish), Assiette Anglaise (French) and Chompoo (Thai).

The front of the restaurant has two large bay windows so passers by can easily see in and diners can people watch just as well and there’s an open kitchen at the back. The staff are casually dressed and very friendly, which helps give Chompoo a laid back, family run feel.

The menu is pretty classic. You’ll find various colour curries, soups, a good range of stirfry dishes, noddles and various seafood options too. We had a Prawn Tom Yum soup (£4.50), which was excellent and is always a great option if your head needs clearing, some Spring Rolls (£4.50)and Chicken Satay (£4.50) to start. The soups are great here but I find the rest of the starters pretty average.

For our main course we had a Chicken Laksa (£7.50), which was so rich and flavoursome. It’s probably the best I’ve had anywhere in London and a Beef Pad Phet (£7.50), which was a rich fragrant sauce of red curry, stir fried with lemongrass, lime leaves, green pepper corns & fresh chilli – similar to a Panang Curry with a portion of coconut rice (a great accompaniment if you’re having a spicy dish).

Based on previous visits I can recommend the Pad Thai, which is excellent and the green and red curries are very good as well. The only criticism I have is that their Som Tum (one of my favourite dishes) doesn’t have any green papaya in it! It’s a carrot based version instead.

Chompoo is an affordable, reliable local Thai restaurant and I’m very glad to have it so close to where I live. It’s become our go to Thai restaurant in Islington.
