Good BBQ, great portions, excellent value

My friend Paul and I met up for lunch at The Abbey Tavern after Phileas Hog Tweeted me to come down and check them out. Paul had apparently played at their open mic before but I’d never been to The Tavern before. The pub itself has a really cool feel, my kind of place. Lots of wood, light, exposed brick, fairy lights behind the bar. As well as the open mic they host a regular comedy evening as well as DJs on Friday and Saturday nights.
Phileas Hog had suggested I try the The Piggy Back with cheese and bacon (£9), described as a “Phileas burger topped with pulled pork, plus home-pickled red cabbage for bite and rang. Not for the faint-hearted.” Sounded ace so I went for it (minus the bacon). As you can see below, it’s a beast! It was a very messy, tasty eat but I thought there was too much going on and the burger was a bit overcooked. The pulled pork was lovely though.
Paul had The Phileas Hog (£7) “Our trademark. Free range Suffolk pork shoulder, slow cooked to melting pulled perfection with a blend of tangy spices. Served in a toasted ciabatta roll with crunchy coleslaw. Choose from one of our homemade sauces to compliment the pork. Southern smoky barbecue, British bramley apple, Spicy Mexican or Maple & mustard.” Again, this was a massive amount of food, in fact Paul couldn’t finish it but as it was much simpler in terms of ingredients than the Piggy Back, it allowed the pulled pork to shine.
We also had a portion of the Poutine (£4.50) – triple cooked chips loaded with mozzarella and cheddar, smothered in thick, rich meat gravy. Delicious! I’ve only had poutine a couple of times before at Hawksmoor Spitalfields Bar where they add slow-cooked pig’s head to add another level but the poutine here was plenty tasty too.

Meaty Mac ‘n’ Cheese (£4)
Homemade unctuous, cheesy, meaty macaroni goodness encased in breadcrumbs and deep fried, pure filth!
Jalapeno Poppers (£3.50)
For those who like it hot! Whole jalapenos hand stuffed with mozzarella and coated in breadcrumbs, served with smoky chipotle mayo.
If I wanted BBQ I’d probably go to Bodean’s, Smokehouse or Pitt Cue first but the food Phileas Hog are producing is of a good standard and the large portions mean you’re getting plenty of value for your hard earned cash. It’s good pub food in a good pub with good beer so it ticks most of my boxes.
