Stunning setting with top class service and food - outstanding value for money.

The Wolseley is a café-restaurant in the grand European tradition located in St James’ a few doors down from The Ritz. It was originally designed as a prestigious car showroom in 1921 for The Wolseley Car Company, then used a bank it was restored and opened as The Wolseley in late 2003.

I booked breakfast for Antonia and I at The Wolseley as part of a birthday surprise. I’d never been before but from what I’d seen online it was well reviewed and looked stunning. It was even more impressive in real life as the scale and grandeur of the interior hits you as you enter. It really is a beautiful building, full of marble with black and gold detailing.

We were seated in the main curve opposite the entrance, between two other couples and were handed the extensive menu. Breakfast starts at 07:00 on the dot from Monday to Friday (and from a gentler 8am at the weekend). All the Viennoiserie‎ is made on the premises with the Mixed Basket containing a selection of mini; croissant, pain au chocolat, danish, amandine pain sucré au beurre normand, cannelé bordelais (£8.50) being the star of show.

There’s a great selection of dishes on the breakfast menu to suit all palettes, including granola, fruit salad, fish cakes, potato rosti and kedgeree as well as The English with a choice of Fried, Poached or Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, Baked Beans, Tomato, Black Pudding and Mushroom (£16.50).

Antonia decided to have the Potato Rosti with Avocado, Tomato and Fried Egg (£8.75) which was really good value and beautifully cooked. I had The English, which was certainly a good fry up but equally certainly not worth £16.50. The black pudding had a very crumbly texture to it, which I can’t say I was a fan of I think one sausage is a bit stingy when you’re paying that kind of money.

I had a Carrot & Ginger Juice (£2.75) which was nice and fresh and Antonia had The Wolseley juice of the day, which was Plum (£2.50). I don’t ever remember trying plum juice before but it was delicious! We also had a coffee each. I had a lovely, smooth Café Crème (£3.75) and Antonia had (probably) the most expensive Americano in the world at £4.75.

Once we’d finished our food our waiter brought over a mixed basket of Viennoiserie‎ on the house as a birthday surprise, which was a lovely touch. He then did the same with the couples either side of us – clearly The Wolseley is a popular choice for a special occasion!

We both loved breakfast at The Wolseley. The room feels grand, has a majestic quality and the service was very good throughout. There are definitely overpriced things on the menu, like The English and most of the coffee but if you order well you can easily eat well for less than £15 a head, which all things considered is incredible value for money.

It’s an impressive setting for a special occasion, whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner. I do tend to favour Duck & Waffle as a go to fancy breakfast option (you can’t beat that view) but The Wolseley is right up there too.
