Fancy dim sum. Fancy prices.
An “all-day grazing experience, specialising in modern authentic dim sum, as well as wok-friendly dishes and other ‘small eats’”, Yauatcha is another venture by Alan Yau, which opened in 2004 and was awarded a Michelin star within a year.
My brother and his now fiancée Alex had been to Yauatcha before and as a birthday treat to me offered to take Antonia and I one Friday night – thanks guys! We were seated upstairs, which has a lounge feel and incorporates a Franco-Asian pâtisserie counter along one side. The tables are low, meaning the seats are even lower, which did my knees no favours. Downstairs feels classier, with low lighting and classier decor.
We ordered a few dim sum dishes, some main courses and sides all for the table to share. The Char Siu Buns (£4.20) were a bit low on filling but the small amount there was tasted delicious. The Chinese Chive and Prawn Dumplings (£5.60) were impressive as was the Pan-fried Turnip Cake with dried shrimp (£5.50) – an often overlooked classic. To round off the dim sum we had a portion of Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf with chicken and dried shrimp (£5), which was pretty authentic.
On to the main courses we ordered Stir-fry Double Cooked Pork Belly in chilli sauce (£11.30), Thai Style Chicken with mango, papaya and chilli, coriander (£13.80) and a side of Spicy Aubergine, Sato Bean, Okra and French Beans with peanut (£12.90), a portion of Beef Ho Fun (£11) and a pot of Jasmine Rice (£2.20). The pork was decent, but nothing special. The ho fun at Yauatcha wasn’t as good as places like Phoenix Palace or Gerrard’s Corner. The chicken however was a revelation! Crispy, zingy, fresh, stunning – it was a shame we had to share it!
Being a birthday meal, there was an inevitable dessert with a candle and a bunch of staff singing “Happy birthday dear ______… Happy birthday to yooooou!”. My brother had gone over to the dessert counter on his way to the bathroom and picked out the Apple Pie (£8.50). Pretty cool dessert with a mousse on top shaped to look like an apple.
Yauatcha was a bit disappointing for me and there was only one stand out dish – the Thai Style Chicken. It’s a good place for suits to take clients but if you’re after dim sum, go somewhere else – it’s overpriced here and if you want authentic Chinese dishes, go to an authentic Chinese restaurant. For not much more money you could go to Kai Mayfair and that always impresses.
